The agriculture industry is a highly skilled business

DairyNZ - getting cows inThe agriculture industry is evolving into a very high-tech business - we're moving away from a mud and gumboots mentality and the industry needs smart, forward-thinking people both on and off-farm to address future challenges.

There are many different institutions where students can study towards agriculture-specific degrees, national certificates and diplomas to prepare for a future in agriculture.

If you're interested in working on-farm, many of the skills are learned on the job and through industry-organised discussion groups, farm consultants and company representatives.

Farmers develop a range of skills on-farm, such as financial and business planning, human resource management, animal welfare, asset and machinery maintenance, pasture management and fencing. These skills are valuable and easily transferable should a young farmer decide to change his or her career in the future.
