The Rural Banker & Farm Owner
Tim works for ANZ as an Agri Manager. He also owns a cropping and grazing farm just outside of Hamilton, and is the 2013 ANZ Young Farmer Contest Champion.
What's your typical day like?
A split between office and field time. I spend time visiting clients to discuss what's happening on-farm and to provide assistance where we can, otherwise I'm in the office processing the info from the visits.
What do you love most about your job?
Being able to get out on farm and talk to so many different farmers and learn so many different things.
What skills do you need to do your job well?
The key skill you need is the ability to relate to people and build rapport with them.
Are there any qualifications you need in a job like yours?
A university degree is crucial. It's best if it's something agriculture related.
What is the most challenging aspect to your job?
Balancing time between being in the office and out in the field.
Is a farming background essential to do a job like yours?
An understanding of the farming cycle is essential; so having a background in that is a big help.
What advice would you give to young people?
Make the most of every opportunity you can. The more you can learn and the more you can do for people, the better off you will be.
What are your goals for the future?
To continue to grow my farming business and to continue to add more value to an industry I'm really passionate about.
